Let's see what kind of beast this Special Tourist Visa (hereinafter referred to as STV) is.
Let's start with the fact that this is a new type of visa that was introduced in October 2021. And at the moment, you can apply for this visa until 09/31/2022. Further extension or cancellation is possible, we’ll see it later.
What is an STV anyway - it's an upgrade to a simple tourist visa. And if the latter can be obtained for a maximum of 90 days, then according to STV, a stay in Thailand is up to 270 days.
Initially, a visa is obtained for 90 days, then a double extension of 90 + 90 is possible.
Who might be interested in this visa?
Those who plan to live in Thailand for a long period, but are not going to work here officially, winterers, those who plan to wait out the “hard” times, and of course, this is a great option for freelancers.
How and where to apply?

What documents are required?
- Passport valid for more than 12 months from the date of entry into Thailand;
- 2 copies of the passport;
- 2 recent color photograph (4x6 cm) taken within the last 6 months;
- 2 completed and signed visa applications (Completed and signed by the applicant). Children must have their own visa application and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must sign the application on behalf of the child;
- Fully paid quarantine hotel reservation;
- Confirmation of payment for accommodation after the quarantine period.
- Thai health insurance covers hospitalization and emergency/accidents for the entire stay in Thailand, with outpatient treatment coverage of at least 40,000 baht and inpatient treatment of at least 400,000 baht.
- Medical certificate confirming the absence of diseases preventing entry and specified in the Decree of the Ministry No. 14, the certificate must be valid for no more than three months;
- Proof of relationship for the spouse (marriage certificate) and for the child/children under 18 (birth certificate);
- The application fee is $80.
When to apply?
Documents must be submitted at least 15 days before the expected date of departure.
